Rochester, MN (January 17, 2020) - The Southeast Minnesota Area Labor Council commends the county boards of Blue Earth, Fillmore, Goodhue, Mower, Nicollet, Olmsted, Rice, and Steele counties for voting in favor of accepting new refugees. Minnesota’s Labor Movement stands in solidarity with all those who face persecution and violent upheaval around the world. We welcome all to join our Minnesota communities.
Pommella Wegmann, president of the Southeast Minnesota Area Labor Council said, “The Labor Movement remains committed to the ongoing struggle to ensure that we are all able to live and work with dignity, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, faith, or where we were born. Union halls are open to everyone. Our communities and places of employment should be, too.” Many counties in Southeastern Minnesota will be deciding in the coming months to take a vote on this issue. The SEMMNALC urges Dodge, Faribault, Freeborn, Houston, LeSueur, Wabasha, Waseca, and Winona counties to stand with the Labor Movement and our neighbors by voting in favor of refugee resettlement in our communities.
The Southeast Minnesota Area Labor Council, AFL-CIO represents over 40,000 union members in southern Minnesota. The council’s mission is to improve the lives for working families by bringing economic justice to the workplace and social justice to our state and nation. The SEMNALC is one of 500 state and local labor councils in the United States. They represent union members throughout Blue Earth, Dodge, Faribault, Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Houston, LeSueur, Mower, Nicollet, Olmsted, Rice, Steele, Wabasha, Waseca, and Winona counties.###
